Short and intense: Seminars in English at the IVO Congress in Cologne
At this year's IVO Congress at the ORTHOPÄDIE SCHUH TECHNIK trade fair, there will be a number of seminars in English, which will provide an opportunity to explore the congress topics in greater depth.
Registration for the seminars is open. As seminar places are limited, early booking is recommended. To book, click on the title of the seminar.
Basics of Gait Analysis
Kelly Robb Michael Ryan
Friday, 9.30 – 10.30 a.m.
Motion analyses can help to track down the causes of overuse complaints in sports. They are also an important tool for evaluating the effect of orthopedic devices such as foot orthotics. In this seminar, the basics of motion analysis will be explained and its possible applications in practical patient treatment will be demonstrated: Which parameters do I have to pay special attention to during the analysis? How do I relate the results of the analysis to the symptoms? How can I implement the analysis results in practical care for the patients? The speakers are themselves pedorthists and have many years of experience in motion analysis.
North american and European concepts in pedorthics compared
(Kelly Robb, Michael Ryan)
Friday, 12.30 – 1.30 p.m.
Foot problems may be manifested with the same symptoms everywhere. But the approach to therapy varies from country to country or continent to continent. Those familiar with pedorthics know that there are major differences between the European and North American approaches. In this seminar, participants can learn where these differences lie and what similarities there are in care.
Using a common and frequently encountered problem, the presenters, both well versed in foot orthotics and the underlying theory, will introduce the North American approach to foot orthotics. This will include history taking, an examination without and with weight bearing, gait analysis, followed by a synthesis of these examination results leading to the selection of appropriate footwear and the design, fabrication and delivery of an orthotic.
During the presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss each step. The speakers will present in English. The main content will be translated into German for the participants.
The importance of neurophysiology in pedorthic care
(Kelly Robb, Michael Ryan)
Friday, 5.00 – 6.00 p.m.
This presentation is intended to take a complex topic, such as neurophysiology in pedorthics, and simplify it for the attendees. The delivery of the presentation is an interview style, adding humor and simplistic language.
Orthopedic Footwear Modifications – biomechanics meet practical application
Thomas Stief
Friday, 2.00 – 3.00 p.m.
The optimal treatment with adaptations (modifications) to orthotic footwear is only possible by tracking clear and comprehensible treatment objectives. Biomechanical competences as well as technical and orthopedic skills play an important role in their formulation and implementation in daily practice. In the course „Orthotic Footwear Modifications – biomechanics meet practical application“ we will focus on:
- how types of biomechanical stress differ in various kinds of pathologies and influences gait characteristics,
- which treatment objectives could be addressed by Orthotic Footwear Modifications to meet the clinical needs of the individual user,
- and the importance of biomechanical measurements in daily practice to achieve the treatment objectives.
Training, Qualification, Recognition – International Seminar
Fred Holtkamp
(Fred Holtkamp, Jessica Hohenschon, Karl-Heinz Schott, Daniel Petcu)
Friday, 3.30 – 5.00 p.m.
Which models for training in pedorthic exist and how can they be adapted to the individual situation in a country? How can training and research be combined? Which strategies promise success in the pursuit of governmental recognition of the profession? These questions are in the focus of this international seminar, to which all are cordially invited who want to establish or further develop the profession of pedorthics in their country. Experienced experts will report on strategies for creating training and on successful examples from practice. In various working groups within the seminar, there will be opportunities to discuss different issues with peers and to establish contacts for further collaboration and exchange. The seminar is free of charge, registration is required.
Pressure distribution measurement (pedobarography) in practice
Axel Kalpen
Saturday, 12.30 – 1.30 p.m.
Pressure distribution measurement under the foot plays an important role in the care of patients with diabetic foot syndrome. In patients who can no longer feel the pressure on their feet due to neuropathy, it can identify regions of the foot that are particularly at risk. In addition, it provides the orthopedic shoemaker with reliable information about the success of his work – if he uses the technique correctly. In this seminar, the general conditions for measurements in practice are explained and demonstrated, ensuring reproducible and comparable measurement results between two measurement appointments. Furthermore, the interpretation of the most important parameters will be introduced and the importance of limit values will be discussed.
Custom orthotic shoes: More than just shoes!
Karl-Heinz Schott
Saturday, 2.00 – 3.00 p.m.
The custom orthotic shoe as functional appliance is little known in many countries. In the seminar the former IVO-president Karl-Heinz Schott explains what the custom orthotic shoe should be able to do and when it is subscribed – and that the certified pedorthist generates the diagnostic findings himself and that he decides on the treatment. He shows how patients can be treated in a country where pedorthic works are not part of the services of health insurance companies and where the physician is not the initiator of the treatment. It will also be discussed how the „Priority Assistive Product List“ of the WHO has changed the treatment situations in various countries.
